A minefield of a topic, for sure - IMO, feminism was primarily about advocating for women's rights and challenging systems that oppress women. While it often intersects with other areas, its core focus has to stay true to its origins — the experiences of women.
Yes, it was complex to write about it. The first refuge was set up in Chiswick in 1971 and feminism had a big role to play. The founder, Erin Pizzey, was a feminist then but later became an ex. feminist who advocated for fundamental rights for all and men's rights. I believe she got banned from the refuge after that. There are many branches to feminism - 1st wave, 2nd wave, etc, and I think today its role and focus is protecting women's rights and children from abuse, and there is overlap with gender equality also - as they realize abuse happens to men also by women and same gender. Also, Erin strongly advocates for children's rights, given the trauma they experience witnessing violence and abuse, which affects them later in life.
Thank you for covering the nuances of feminism and its relationship to gender equality so clearly. They are different movements but also have similarities and common goals. As you suggested,d integrating them can give us a bigger picture of both women's and men's rights. This is a complex topic and triggers different emotions in different people due to its subjective nature.
Thank you Dr Yildiz, it is indeed a triggering topic. Everyone has not only very different experiences, but perceptions. The emphasis that is placed on gender equality and women’s rights can often be confused.
